Third graders take the foundational skills they’ve learned thus far and apply them when it comes to writing. Now they should be able to:
- Use thinking maps to organize their ideas.
- Write in various genres: Letters, personal narratives, fiction stories, non-fiction, and non-fiction research reports.
- Revise and edit their writing pieces.
- Write in paragraphs using transition words.
- Write in cursive.
- Understand parts of speech: noun, verb, and adjective.
- Correctly use basic punctuation.
- Understand prefixes, suffixes, and homophones.
- Use reference books such as the dictionary and thesaurus.
- Support opinions in expository writing.
Writing is vital for success in most careers and disciplines today, so students must begin to acquire good writing skills early to prepare for adult life. Unfortunately, learners of any skills set can struggle with writing skill and they sometimes students need additional help to develop these skills.
