For Students Who Work Best in Groups
Unique approach: Kids on the Yard Small Groups foster a learning environment with exceptional tutors that meet every student’s individual needs without isolating kids on screens.
Flexibility
Our tutors are trained to develop a keen awareness of their student’s needs and are responsive to each group’s learning. Our tutors use the ‘think aloud’ strategies to move students to learn forward or return to previously known materials. The tutor live models verbalizing the thought processes students should engage in when completing a task. Your child will hear a piece of learning broken down into the steps they need to take and see the task’s challenges and how to solve those problems. They understand the possibilities of change in their approach after making a mistake and that making mistakes is part of their learning journey.
Collaboration
Small-group tutoring is not unique in being collaborative, but what is extraordinary is interaction amongst peers. Struggling learners can possibility be identified as those who lack confidence, therefore, manifesting itself in multiple ways inside a classroom setting – disruptive, withdrawn, or reluctant behaviors are usually common for these students, especially when a discussion is underway.
When allowed to participate in a discussion in a smaller group, these students often feel less inhibited and valued. In addition, the bond which grows between themselves and their peers as the tutoring block progresses often adds to students’ new-found confidence.
Collaborative learning also helps students to:
- Reflect on their learning
- Learn from others as well as their tutor
- increase participation from more shy students
- Increase everyone’s engagement
Engagement and Motivation
Small group teaching is a beautiful setting that cultivates creativity, passion, and enthusiasm. It also offers students an opportunity for growth to develop their academic identity and nurtures participation and engagement with peers. ‘School’ becomes a process of learning together. For our tutors, finding innovative ways to sustain this engagement improves learning and makes teaching more enjoyable, rewarding, and challenging.
Tutors who have been tutoring online for a while tell us that there are additional things you can do to improve motivation when working online. Instructions are kept simple, the pace is maintained, and the tutor regularly checks that each student is alright and understands the lesson’s content. Students are assigned roles within group discussions so that each participant has the opportunity to contribute.
Reflection
Reflecting on learning is critical, not just at the end of a block of learning but the beginning and continuously throughout. In a small group setting, quick checks of understanding, open questions, and end-of-session reflective questions are effective ways to ensure that no student is left behind.

Small group instruction in literacy, math, and writing benefits students tremendously, making learning from their beloved teacher/tutor and peers more enjoyable. It’s incredibly collaborative, allows for differentiation and individualized instruction, and increases interest from your students.
