What First Grade should know by the end of the school year?

Language and Reading

Part of our tutoring sessions is to assess your child’s current reading level and then design lessons to strengthen existing skills and then work on growth opportunities in reading.
  • Skills Worked On:
    • Read a variety of literary, informational texts and understand the more in-depth stories with pictures.
    • Communicate their understanding and express their opinion during partner work and talk and turns.
    • Generate and organize ideas to form complete sentences
    • A first-grader reading level varies based on pre-school prep and kindergarten reading exposure.

What to expect in First Grade with READING!

First grade is the YEAR; Children learn HOW to read! Many children begin the year by sounding out essential consonant-vowel-consonant three-letter words such as “cat.” Spelling lists and weekly spelling tests are standard practice in most first-grade classrooms. First graders also learn to answer key story ideas, retell the story and describe the characters and by the end of the year, first graders are reading more complicated sentences than just sounding how whole words. Last, they learn how to read grade-level text with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression.

Reading, Phonics, and Writing

Learn to demonstrate phonological awareness, knowledge of the alphabet, and reading and writing skills.

Logic & Reasoning

Learn to understand symbols and their sequencing, as well as to use problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

First Grade Math

First-grade students learn addition and subtraction strategies for numbers 0-20 in addition to sequencing, place value, measurement, telling time, using graphs, and knowing three-dimensional shapes. Teachers use helpful tools such as base ten blocks, unifix cubes, a calendar, dice, number lines, hundreds of charts, clocks, and counters for students to experience hands-on math.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

First Grade is the year student begin to connect to their core self.  Here are five competencies
  • Self–awareness: Recognizing one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how their behavior influences others
  • Self-management: To self-regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations.
  • Social awareness: To understand others have a different perspective and empathize with other’s feelings.
